MTS MVMS HELPS KEEP SUSSEX & ROTHER SAFE

Safer Rother Partnership invests wisely in a portable message sign

Categories: MOBILE VMS, INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS,

Date: 4th November 2013

The Community Safety Partnership for the Rother area in East Sussex works with the community and agencies within the Rother district to reduce crime, and anti-social behaviour. The partners from Police, Rother District Council, Fire Service, East Sussex County Council, Probation and the local Clinical Commissioning Group identify priorities as part of it’s Community Safety Plan including, road safety, anti-social behaviour, cross border crime.

To assist them with their objectives, they decided to invest in a portable Variable Message Sign from MTS to keep people informed, help fight crime, promote community safety initiatives and make the local area a much safer place to live for local residents and visitors to the region alike.

Portable Variable Message Signs (mVMS)

The Advantage 4280 portable Variable Message Sign was the ideal solution for the Partnership. It is easy and quick to deploy to wherever it’’s needed, is battery powered with a solar recharge and the messages can be changed instantly using any computer or mobile device with internet connectivity.

The Results

Since the Safer Rother Partnership took delivery of the mVMS unit, it has proven to be a valuable asset and has been in constant use from day one.

The unit has already been seen shining bright in various locations throughout Rother and Sussex – keeping people informed of events, showing community safety messages, and appeals for witnesses to incidents or accidents. Residents and businesses have sent positive messages through twitter and to police about the unit and have acted on the community safety messages.

The plan is to continue to maximise the use of the unit by the emergency services and local authorities to keep people well informed now and in the future.

This collaborative approach to pool funding for this message sign and share the use across the region to help improve safety and fight crime is one innovative way the emergency services and local authority are showing commitment to local residents and visitors.

The Advantage 4280 mVMS is fully compliant for use on highways or urban roads throughout the region but also compact enough to deploy in many different locations throughout the region.

Everyone is extremely happy with the results and in fact the unit has already been much more than was originally anticipated with lots more planned.

Deployments recently include:

  • Raising awareness of traffic problems in Camber during the busy summer period
  • Supporting community roadwatch using the speed radar to activate the safety messages
  • Advance advertising road closures during events
  • To make local communities aware of a particular crime trend in their area
  • Alert criminals to extra police patrols in an area
