Bright thinking can lead to safer roads

Date: 17th October 2013

Recently released figures have thrown into sharp focus the need for bright thinking to improve safety on British roads.

The value attributable to road accidents during the last 12 months has been estimated at more than £15 billion*, according to a report by the Department for Transport.

One area where safety can be improved is lighting and with a growing number of local and highways authorities across the UK switching off street lamps in a bid to save money on energy bills and cut carbon emissions, the battle is on to find an economical and sustainable alternative.

John Swift, of Rennicks UK, believes solar-powered road studs can contribute to a happy medium between fully lit roads and ones plunged into darkness, often with failing traditional road studs and poor line marking.

He said: “The cost of accidents in personal terms can never be under-estimated and the new figures highlight just how much can be saved in purely monetary value if they can be prevented.

“But as more and more street lights are switched off to save money and meet carbon emission targets, the risk of an accident after dark may increase over time, which then offsets the reason for the original lighting.

“We have developed product solutions which could greatly improve safety, is cost effective and sustainable to deploy. Payback is less than a year with a minimum 10-year lifespan, providing real benefits with no on-going operational costs and zero maintenance.

“Active Road Studs use the latest technological LED and Solar advances to offer a highly effective method of surface delineation and segregation which is ideal at night time or in inclement weather conditions such as fog where the studs detect poor lighting even during the day.

“Our SR Active Road Stud range have been developed to meet a broad range of requirements including cycle paths, public transit and shopping centres, in fact any environment where hazard warning and enhanced navigation are important.

“But it is on Britain’s roads where it could be most effective, particularly in areas where street lighting is switched off in night-time hours.”
