Rennicks – Bright Thinking For Safer Cycling Environments

    Date: 30th May 2013

Across the UK, calls are being made by the cycling community for action to make cycle pathways more accessible after dark.

With some riders reporting a lack of confidence in using paths where lighting is not present, the issue is hampering the ability for cycling to become a viable method of transport during night-time hours.

The issue is addressed in a March 2012 Technical Information Note from Sustrans – the UK charity dedicated to smarter travel choices – entitled ‘Lighting of Cycle Paths.’

The report’s introduction says that, in urban and urban fringe areas, if cycling is to play an important role as an alternative to the car for short journeys then it must be promoted as an around-the-clock means of transport – and for cycle journeys made after dark, especially during the winter months, it should be possible to justify the lighting of many cycle routes.

The report goes on to point out a number of benefits of solar studs, including the fact they have a lesser impact on wildlife than traditional lighting, and that they have no operational costs and lower maintenance implications than traditional lighting.

Furthermore, according to the document, where provided on otherwise unlit routes, user feedback on the use of solar studs has been very positive.

Rennicks UK’s SR range of solar powered Active Road Studs deliver a safe, sustainable and economical method of bright delineation across a wide-variety of environments, with bright dual LEDs lighting up the way and leading cyclists safely along their route.

John Swift of Rennicks UK, said: “When we have spoken to cyclists, we are told that as well as shared use being of concern a common problem is that the cycle path they take for regular journeys, often for work, is generally fine to use in the mornings, but in winter, during dark nights, they are much more reluctant to take that route home.

“Solar road studs offer the latest technological advances to address this concern, offering a highly-effective method of surface illumination, of particular use during night-time hours or inclement weather conditions.  They also provide delineation and segregation for more orderly use and quicker travelling.

“Our SR Active Road Stud range has been developed to meet the requirements of cycle paths and Guided Highways for cyclists, as well as campuses and tunnels and other locations where safety and enhanced navigation are important.”
